Cross Country, like all extracurricular activities is a supplement to students' growth while in our care at Prairie High School. We strongly support academics and work closely with our teachers to enhance our athletes learning and motivation in the classroom. We understand the importance of family and faith.
We also understand that students have many other interests. Involvement in other sports and activities is highly recommended. Additionally, we collaborate effectively with sponsors and coaches of activities that overlap with our season, be it other sports or the arts, such as participating in band. If a student is interested in pursuing and exploring other activities we will support that desire.
We recognize that students join our team for a variety of reasons, ranging from competitive desire to fitness enhancement to social growth and opportunity. No matter the reason for their presence, we will work to provide the best experience possible.
We also understand that athletes come to us from diverse backgrounds and with a range of athletic ability, especially since this is a 9-12 sport. We will take each individual as they are when they report. We have very high expectations for attendance, behavior, and work ethic for all. And for all student athletes, we individualize training programs to maximize their potential.
We have 4 program goals by which we judge our program.
1. Character. Great behavior is expected of everyone involved in our program. Character is on display in the classroom, lunchroom, on the bus and out with friends on Saturday night. Understand that each of us represents team, school, family, and community- represent well! We judge character and want to be known for 3 benchmarks of character:
2. Team unity. We understand each participant has talents and challenges that are unique. We know there is a big difference in physical maturity among individuals. We will respect all these diversities and more. We are each responsible for our positive and encouraging environment. And we will honor and celebrate all of our teammates.
3. Competitive success. This is varsity athletics at the highest level. We will be competitive in a rigorous schedule of invitationals. We will train hard. We will compete for medals and trophies. Our program is a periodized designed for peak performance in championship season. We prioritize the Conference Meet and State Meet. We celebrate individual accomplishments for all athletes throughout the season, as measured by personal records.
4. Fun. We believe there is an inherent feeling of fulfillment and pride derived from hard work and a job well done. We honor the growth demonstrated due to these efforts. We will incorporate team building and fun activities throughout the season. And after all... it's no fun if you're not having fun!
